Taira’s story in transplant began in 2017, when she learned a co-worker was looking for a kidney donor for her 13-year-old son, Jamie. Taira knew she didn’t have the right blood type, but her husband, Shaun, did and he volunteered to be evaluated. Inspired by Shaun’s generosity to a stranger, Taira decided she wanted to be a non-directed donor for someone else in need. While starting that process, Taira learned that a friend of a friend was in need of a kidney transplant. She got in touch with the woman in need, Katie, and started the evaluation process to be her donor. After months of testing, Taira successfully donated her kidney to Katie, and two weeks later, Shaun successfully donated his kidney to Jamie.

The donation experience was so rewarding that Taira made it her mission to work with other living donors, and in 2019, she became a Living Donor Coordinator in Colorado. Upon starting her new career, she learned about living liver donation and began the evaluation process to be a non-directed liver donor. Six months later, she successfully donated a portion of her liver to an 11-month-old at the local Children’s Hospital.

With more than three years of experience working as a Living Donor Coordinator, Taira learned a great deal about the donor process, and what inspires others to consider living donation. She looks forward to using this knowledge to help those in need find their own living donor.

Taira currently resides in sunny Sarasota, with her husband and four cats. She loves lounging by the pool, getting creative in the kitchen with plant-based dishes, and sunsets on Siesta Key.
